VIEW PROJECTS

1. Part Design

Before manufacturing anything, you must design the part using CAD software (for example, SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion, or CATIA).

The following aspects should be taken into account:

  • Uniform wall thickness.
  • Draft angles.
  • Ribs and reinforcing features.
  • Material shrinkage.
  • Dimensional tolerances.

2. Injection Mold

It is the most important component and usually the most expensive.

A mold typically includes:

  • Cavity and core.
  • Feeding system (runners and injection gate).
  • Ejection system.
  • Cooling circuits.

Molds can be manufactured in:

  • Aluminum (short production runs).
  • Steel (medium- or high-volume production).

Estimated costs:

  • Simple prototype molds: €1,000–€5,000.
  • Industrial production molds: €5,000–€50,000 or more.

3. Injection Molding Machine

The machine melts the plastic and injects it into the mold.

It is selected according to:

  • Part size.
  • Shot weight.
  • Required clamping force.
Machines range from small benchtop presses to industrial equipment with clamping forces of several hundred tons.

4. Raw Material

Some of the most commonly used plastics are:

MaterialCharacteristics
PP (Polypropylene)Cost-effective, durable
PE (Polyethylene)Flexible
ABSHigh impact resistance
PC (Polycarbonate)Very strong
PA (Nylon)High mechanical strength
POMExcellent dimensional accuracy

5. Auxiliary Equipment

Depending on the production requirements, the following equipment is typically needed:

  • Material dryer.
  • Granulator for recycling sprues.
  • Mold temperature controller.
  • Cooling system (chiller).
  • Conveyor belts or handling systems.

6. Quality Control

It is important to verify:

  • Dimensions.
  • Weight.
  • Surface defects.
  • Shrinkage.
  • Mechanical strength.

The cost of an injection molded part is divided into two parts:

  • Fixed cost: the mold.
  • Variable cost: material, machine time, labor, and logistics.

For this reason, the cost per part can vary significantly depending on the production volume.

Simple example

Let’s assume a part with:

  • 50 g of ABS plastic.
  • Approximate size: 10 × 5 × 3 cm.
  • Simple single-cavity mold.

Costs:

  • Mold: 8.000 €
  • Material per part: 0,10–0,20 €
  • Injection molding and handling: 0,05–0,30 €

Total variable cost:

  • Between €0.15 and €0.50 per part.

However, if the mold cost is distributed across the production volume:

Production Mold cost per part Approx total cost.
1.000 units8,00 €8,20–8,50 €
10.000 units0,80 €0,95–1,30 €
100.000 units0,08 €0,23–0,58 €
1.000.000 units0,008 €0,16–0,51 €

Typical price ranges

  • Small part (cap, clip, bracket): 0,02–0,20 €.
  • Small part (cap, clip, bracket): €0.02–€0.20.
  • Medium-sized part (electronic enclosure): €0.20–€2.00.

1. Mold Manufacturing Time

It is the longest stage of the process.

  • Simple mold: 2–6 weeks.
  • Medium-complexity mold: 6–12 weeks.
  • Complex or multi-cavity mold: 3–6 months.

Includes:

  • Mold design.
  • CNC machining.
  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) (if required).
  • Adjustments and testing.

2. Time to Manufacture Each Part

Once the mold is ready, production is very fast.

Each injection molding cycle typically takes:

Part Type Cycle Time
Small part (cap, clip) 5–20 s
Medium-sized part (electronic enclosure) 20–60 s
Large part 1–3 min
Thick or highly technical part 3–5 min or more

For example:

  • 30-second cycle.
  • Single-cavity mold.

Production:

  • 120 parts/hour.
  • 2,880 parts/day (24 h).

If the mold has 4 cavities:

  • 480 parts/hour.
  • 11,520 parts/day.

Real-world example

A 100 g ABS enclosure may have:

  • Injection: 2–3 s.
  • Packing: 5–10 s.
  • Cooling: 15–25 s.
  • Ejection: 1–2 s.

Total time:

  • Approximately 25–40 seconds per cycle.

Rule of thumb

  • Initial development (design + mold): typically 1 to 3 months.
  • Part manufacturing: seconds per part.
  • Production of thousands of parts: from a few hours to a few days.

Yes, for example, we have a client in the United Kingdom with operations in Belgium, France, and Spain. Communication with international clients is usually conducted by email in English, although we have also held online meetings without any problems.
